Have you ever wondered how the Montsec Observatory (OdM) managed by IEEC in Sant Esteve de la Sarga works? Do you want to travel among galaxies just by looking at the sky? If the answer is yes, you can’t miss this event!
18:00 Meeting in front of the Montsec Observatory, in the Coll d’Ares area, in Sant Esteve de la Sarga.
18:15 – 19:15 Guided visit to the Observatory
19:30 – 20:30 Outdoor scavenger hunt. A little adventure to pass the time while it gets dark! For people of all ages
20:30 – 21:30 Picnic
21:30 – 23:00 Stargazing with Kike Herrero, technical director of the Montsec Observatory, Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya. The Montsec area is certified as a Starlight Reserve, awarded by the Starlight Foundation and endorsed by UNESCO.
Year Joan Oró
Did you know that the Observatory’s main telescope is called Joan Oró, in honor of the Catalan biochemist? Who was he? To honour his legacy, this event is part of the Joan Oró Year.
Joan Oró i Florensa was one of the most relevant scientists of the 20th century. He dedicated his career to the study of the origin of life, an exciting issue that is also very attractive to the general public. In this area, he made major contributions that have inspired subsequent generations of scientists.
The discovery of how a primitive Earth could have manufactured adenine made him a recognizable figure worldwide. The advice he provided for NASA in the Apollo projects and in the design of the Viking missions to Mars, and especially in the correct interpretation of the results that were obtained, increased gave him even more recognition.
