The Finland Regional Network was founded in 2026.
Finland’s aerospace and space sector has grown quietly but steadily into one of Europe’s more active ecosystems. Student teams at Aalto University built Aalto-1, Finland’s first satellite, and that same culture of student-driven innovation gave rise to ICEYE, now a global SAR satellite company.
Other startups that grew out of Finnish universities and incubators include Kuva Space, working on hyperspectral imaging from nanosatellites, and Aurora Propulsion Technologies, developing propulsion systems for small spacecraft. The ESA supersite in Sodankylä gives Finland a unique position in Arctic remote sensing, and all across the country, universities, research institutes, and a growing startup scene are contributing to Earth observation, satellite technology, and space innovation in ways that rarely make headlines outside Finland.
Supporting this ecosystem are programmes such as ESA BIC Finland, which has incubated dozens of space-related startups since 2017, and ESA Phi-Lab Finland, which funds and accelerates geospatial innovation projects aligned with ESA’s broader mission. Space Finland, the national industry association, brings together companies, research institutions, and public bodies to coordinate and promote Finnish space activities at home and internationally.
The WIA-Europe Finland Regional Network was established in 2026 to connect the people behind all of this. We bring together women and underrepresented professionals across the ecosystem, from students to senior researchers and industry experts, building a community that spans the whole country rather than a single city.
