We are honoured to announce that WIA-Europe has been granted official Observer Status for the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).Ā
We aim to promote inclusive participation in the space sector and contribute to the shared goals of the United Nations in the peaceful and equitable use of outer space. Since its inception, WIA-Europe has proudly supported and contributed to UNOOSAās Space4Women programme, actively engaging with its mission to promote gender equality in space activities.
Why WIA-Europeās new official observer status at the COPUOS is a game-changer?
- Representation/inclusion ā It elevates womenās voices and diverse expertise in European space governance.
- Knowledge / skills transfer ā It channels insights into Europeās aerospace networks as WIA-Europe delegates bring back knowledge that shapes skills development, talent pipelines, and capacity-building across the European network.
- Influence / agenda-setting ā It ensures inclusive practices and diverse perspectives inform European space policy and standards.
The WIA-Europe delegation will attend the 63rd Session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of UNCOPUOS, 2ā13 February 2026, reinforcing Europeās voice and advancing inclusive, future-ready space governance.
The Subcommittee serves as a vital international platform for discussing the long-term sustainability of outer space activities and the use of space technology for socio-economic development. Its work has a profound global impact, fostering international cooperation in space science and helping to shape the legal and technical frameworks that govern space exploration for the benefit of all humanity.
